Broadcaster and on-air style

(New York, NY) How one dresses in the media world is almost as important as the story itself. Meet Kelly Dillon, a New Jersey native Boss Babe and 33 year old broadcaster, journalist, and voice-over artist working in New York City.

Kelly is on the CBS Radio team and previously worked for Good Day New York on Fox 5, Bloomberg Radio, and ESPN.

When she’s not helping tri-state area commuters avoid backups on the roads, the seasoned entertainment journalist can be found interviewing Martha Stewart, Sarah Jessica Parker, and other stars in New York. Building on her love for fashion, Kelly is also the editor-in-chief of her popular style and beauty blog, kellydillon.com.

Describe a typical day at the office

"NYC epitomizes chic dressing and we’re known for our love of the colour black. My personal style fully embodies this NYC dressing mantra. There is no typical day in news, every day is very different, but I base what I’m wearing if I’ll be in studio or out in the field."

"Most days I’m in the studio, so I’m able to get away with dressier options and heels (since I get to sit!). Most people would say I’m very lucky to work in radio, because the dress code is pretty casual, but I still love to get dressed up. I work at WCBS 880AM full time, which is a news station, so I like to dress professional, but since it’s radio I’m able to bring in some casual elements. I love to wear a great pair of trousers with either a fun statement top, or a structured blazer and bodysuit underneath. I have the luxury of being able to wear jeans to work, so if I’m feeling a bit lazy I’ll throw on a pair of skinny jeans and a chic blazer."

"When I do television, I wear bold colours and fitted dresses. Unfortunately no black (my favourite colour) or statement pieces (too distracting). So I love a good sheath dress, usually in a jewel toned hue, or bright red as those colours compliment my skin tone nicely and look great on camera."

"On the rare occurrence I’m in the field, I like to be more comfortable since I’m on my feet most of the day and have to dress for the elements (rain, snow, heat, etc)."

What's your favourite look for an important work event?

You can never go wrong with a black dress. My closet is filled with at least 50 (crazy I know!). But I have a nice variety; different lengths, styles, and fabrics."

Where do you like to shop?

"I shop everywhere. For affordable pieces I love Zara, ASOS, and H&M. For a splurge I love Net-a-Porter and Saks. I also love a great discount store like TJ Maxx and Marshalls, as well as Nordstrom Rack, Century 21, and Saks Off Fifth. For great statement pieces, I adore Style Mafia, Pixie Market, and Loeil. I also love vintage shops. It’s always so exciting finding a fab one of kind piece. What Goes Around Comes Around is great in NYC and NJ’s I love Vintage Alley in Verona (my hometown)."

Do you admire any celeb styles?

"I adore Victoria Beckham, Kris Jenner (if I could raid anyone’s closet, it would be hers!), also Kate Bosworth, Diane Kruger, and Kim Kardashian."

Any favourite designers?

"I love way too many designers. A few are Celine, Chloe, Tom Ford, Alexander Wang, Zimmermann, Saint Laurent, Hellessy, Sally LaPointe,

Cinq à Sept, and Delpozo."

Describe a typical weekend

"You can usually find me antiquing with my best friend in upstate NY or western NJ. I love antiques just as much as I love clothing. Or you can find me grabbing a cocktail in the city or hanging with friends at a dinner party.

My favorite off duty weekend look is a pair of black skinny jeans, a band tee (I love heavy metal!) and a chic leather jacket. I have a unique obsession with leather jackets. I just can’t stop buying them. In my humble opinion there’s nothing they don’t go with. I wear mine with everything from a beautiful lace dress, to a pair of jogger pants. I own about 20! Some of my faves are from Zara. They are super affordable and decent quality."

Your style evolution

"My style has evolved and changed quite a bit over the years but it always has been more on the classic side. I followed trends a lot more in my 20s and my style then reflected the popular bobo-chic vibes of the early 2000’s. Now that I’m in my 30s I’m much more confident with who I am and my style. I would describe it as classic and chic, but with a slight edge. I also love to mix in ‘of the moment’ trends but I always do it subtly."

"I love the colour black (I’m guilty of wearing way too much) and I love a head to toe monochromatic look. I think everyone should have a perfectly fitted structured blazer, a chic moto jacket, and a great fitting pair of black skinny jeans."

"I also love ankle boots. I have flat feet and ankle boots are the only thing that provides support and comfort for me, while looking chic and their versatility makes them work with a variety of looks."
